About Somatic Experiencing

In 2008, Aimée completed her advanced training in Somatic Experiencing (SE)® through The Foundation for Human Enrichment. SE is an innovative approach being used around the world to help people recover from profound traumatic experiences including domestic and sexual abuse, violence, war, and other traumas. It is based on the research of Dr. Peter Levine.

Dr. Levine states,

“…trauma is an internal straightjacket created when a devastating moment is frozen in time. …Somatic Experiencing offers a new and hopeful perspective on trauma. It views the human animal as a unique being, endowed with an instinctual capacity to heal, as well as the intellectual spirit to harness that innate capacity.”
Levine, Peter. "Somatic Experiencing for Healing Trauma Manual." 2008. B1.3.

Somatic Experiencing helps individuals access the innate healing capacities of their own bodies. This process helps individuals heal from traumatic symptoms. Trauma can be described in two ways: shock trauma and developmental trauma. Shock trauma might be caused by car accidents, surgical procedures, natural disasters, and sudden loss. Developmental trauma may be related to abuse and/or neglect in early life.

Unlike traditional talk therapy which focuses on cognitive/behavioral capacities, metapsychological constructs or narratives, SE helps individuals work within the “felt sense” of their body to gently access their own innate power for healing and to regain both confidence and a sense of agency in their lives.
